This evening, 82 Edmonton and area bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to creating safer environments for their patrons were recognized at the ninth annual Best Bar None Edmonton Accreditation and Awards.

New to the program this year, the inaugural Best Bar None Edmonton People’s Choice Awards were also presented during the ceremony. Members of the public were able to vote for their favourite accredited establishment from November 5-19.

Both the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton and the University of Alberta Sexual Assault Centre were honoured with a special presentation for their “5 Minute Friend” bystander intervention training program. The program empowers and trains bar staff and management to identify and successfully intervene to prevent sexual violence in a bar environment.
Best Bar None is a voluntary accreditation program for bars that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in service and safety. Bars are evaluated on criteria such as established procedures for handling violence and illicit drugs, ensuring intoxicated patrons make it home safely, cleanliness and maintenance standards, and enforcing a respectful workplace where staff and patrons feel safe.

We acknowledge that our success in making places safer and reducing fear happens when the community and business partners are actively involved. Best Bar None is a leading example of community safety. These locations have to meet a very stringent accreditation process and have to maintain these standards, demonstrating a high level of customer service, a well-run establishment and a safe environment.”
